Trial: Perennial

Years Trialed: 1998, 1999

Good Qualities

Year 1

Strong, stiff stems (3); Great color (3); Large flower heads (3); There were a lot of blooms per plant and the long stems held very lovely blooms. Also, no disease or insect damage was noted; Fits in well with fall work; Long lasting, good bloomer; Just kept producing; Very tough material; Had 36 shipped, 36 lived.

Year 2

Great color (3); I really liked this one. It lasted forever in a vase. My customers loved it! And it was so prolific. It bloomed for a long time. It seemed the more I cut, the more it bloomed; Strength of stem. Size of bloom; Strong stems; Lots of it, strong, good color for use with sunflowers and monkshood.

Problems

Year 1

A few of the plants died; Flowered well and then died back, some plants totally dead, some survived; Couldn’t pick until they began to fade as they wouldn’t hold up otherwise!

Year 2

Had to be careful to cut it when it was ready and make sure it wasn’t left out in the sun for long as it will wilt quickly; None. Didn’t take our summer too well. Smaller flower heads than ‘Terra Cotta’.

Comments

Year 1

Similar to other yarrows and ‘Terra Cotta’; The blooms were plentiful and the stems were very upright; Smells kind of funny; Gave 3 flushes of flowers-Began picking August 1 and still picking September 30; ‘Terra Cotta’ seems similar and a more vigorous grower. Both are great; This guy was still going strong when we got a hard frost. They just wouldn’t quit. I have a problem knowing when to cut Achilleas as I want them when the color is strongest but they don’t hold up well then.

Year 2

Couldn’t ask for more in a plant than this one and the ‘Terra Cotta’, both provided pretty flowers, prolific, long stems, long bloom time—-what more could you ask?; Good performance, difficult to harvest, lots of variability, many stems too short for harvest. Good flower size. Excellent color; More upright stems than on ‘Terra Cotta’ but similar problems with variability of harvest. Excellent perenniality, good color;
