Trial: Perennial

Years Trialed: 1999, 2000

Good Qualities

Year 1

The few flowers that I got were rather pretty; Jury still out. Grew well; Plants left have filled in nicely and only show little burn from heat.

Year 2

Great vigor, easy, large heads; Much more vigorous 2nd year, therefore, foliage and stems are extremely nice.

Problems

Year 1

Perhaps it was the drought or maybe they didn’t like being transplanted but they never did do very well. Seemed to be very weak and they flopped on the ground. Maybe I should have staked them; Powdery mildew; Flower is inconspicuous. Deer love this one.

Year 2

All of the ones I ended up with flowered white; colors are more exciting; Very unimpressive flower, poor color, very poor yield.

Comments

Year 1

Has similar foliage to Columbine; I really like the Thalictrums and maybe they will do better next year; May require vernalization. Probably should be fall planted (in California); May get better in future years; All survived, just didn’t flower yet, am optimistic about future.

Year 2

Similar to Thalictrum delavayi and Thalictrum delavayi ‘Hewitt’s Double’; Must pick just before flower open; to pick later reduces vase life 2-4 days, oasis preservative lasted 9 days, in plain water, lasted 7 days; All species and cultivars appear uneconomic by the few cuttable stems produced.
