Agastache Barberi 'Tutti Frutti'

Trial: Perennial

Years Trialed: 1998, 1999

Good Qualities

Year 1

Beautiful color (4); Long stems (3); Fragrant foliage (2); Loaded with blooms. It had no pests; Shape, lasting qualities; Very long bloom period; Attractive in a bunch.

Year 2

Nice foliage fragrance

Problems

Year 1

Flowers shatter (3); The brittle stems would make transplanting/cutting difficult (2). The plants tend to break at the base and can look weedy; Not showy.

Year 2

Flowers shatter, would be better as garden plant

Comments

Year 1

'Tutti Frutti' must be staked or the plants will fall over in the latter part of the season; Smelled a bit funny. Hope it overwinters. People liked it, especially the name and remembered it; Started picking 7/10/98 and was still picking at end of September. Lots of stems left to pick; Would be nice if it didn't shatter; Spindly stems. Not a good seller; this could go from a 1 to a 5 if there were a secret way of keeping it from shedding. Showed it to florists who loved it but won't buy it because of shedding; Florist liked the flower but would not use in vase arrangements.

Year 2

I knew this one wouldn’t make it but I was hoping. I really liked it last year!; Great garden plant. Not good as cut.
