Crocosmia 'Emily McKenzie'

Trial: Perennial

Years Trialed: 2002, 2003

Good Qualities

Year 1

Delicate, bright orange color (5); Vigorous grower; Exotic feel, holds up well as cut; We will see how good they do next season - I think we may have a difficult time growing them here (Zone 6b); Vigorous bulbs, I was surprised by how well these did.

Year 2

Nice color (2); Good size flowers; Vigorous grower.

Problems

Year 1

Flowers don=t last long after cut; Smaller, less height than 'Lucifer'; Short, not sure if hardy; Small corms get lost easily in planting - Not sure this is hardy to Zone 6b; Bulbs arrived without being graded - Many were so tiny that I threw the whole mess in a bulb crate and grew them in that all summer; Grasshoppers; Some insect problems to foliage only.

Year 2

Not as vigorous as other cultivars; This plant throws too many corms and crowds itself out, leading to a lot of foliage and fewer flowers, it must be lifted every 2 seasons, and small corms separated out and planted separately.

Comments

Year 1

Similar to Crocosmia 'Lucifer'; Nice yellow, orange color, multiplies rapidly - I hope the plant will survive and thrive - It would be useless for me unless bigger.

Year 2

Similar to Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’; Did not dig bulbs, we had a moderate winter, going to leave in ground for one more year; This plant just doesn’t seem to survive here as a perennial; We had an unusually cool wet spring and my other crocosmia were really spectacular (45 inch stems), this one was really just ok, bulbs were very small on arrival and suspect that larger bulbs would have performed better this year; Nice yellow orange color.
