Trial: Perennial

Years Trialed: 1999, 2000

Good Qualities

Year 1

Beautiful flower (3); Great color (3); I loved this one and so did my customers. The length was great, they held up well in a vase; Stems are strong; Good stem length. Good vase life; I think I personally would do better by letting it go to seed and selling it in that stage. Nice clear red.

Year 2

Strong, healthy. Really large ‘sprays’, great color, I was surprised at how large and tall the flower spikes were, I would say this was an excellent selection of ‘Lucifer’; Striking – sold well at farmers markets and with florists; Florists love this as a replacement for freesia that have gone out of season; Excellent color, very vigorous, makes saleable pod, very popular.

Problems

Year 1

I did lose some of these and some didn’t blossom before frost but it could have been because of the drought; Not all plants grew; Based on prior experience, plants are more disease susceptible and short lived than other crocosmia (but this is the best cut flower); Doesn’t like my clay soil; Plants seem to be struggling; A lot of dry rot in the bulbs.

Year 2

Must buy large bulbs – first year these were not very productive, but bulbs from Walters Gardens planted this spring produced well in first year; Must be picked for fresh cut with only one or two florets open; must be dug and divided every 5-6 years, produces many corms.

Comments

Year 1

I will definately grow this one again. It was wonderful!; This is the strongest crocosmia I’ve grown, in fact, it’s the only one I’ve grown successfully. The bulbs were strong and I expect good yields next year; In our area should be fall planted. Spring planting does not produce a good crop until 2nd season; Not for use at farmer’s market because of special postharvest handling needs.

Year 2

Not much could take the summer we had; Very popular as pod or fresh.
