Lysimachia Vulgaris

Trial: Perennial

Years Trialed: 1999, 2000

Good Qualities

Year 1

Nice dark yellow flower. Long vase life. Good florist reception. Size fits well in many types of arrangements; Vigorous.

Year 2

When it blooms - nice color, good vase life; Strong, bulky, grew like mad, could be a very aggressive spreader.

Problems

Year 1

Invasive plant–surround with weed barrier and till edges. Flushes all at once; Previously tried and discarded because of lack of acceptance by most customers; Plant is prostrate and showing chlorosis.

Year 2

Too aggressive, sends out runners but no flowers; Failed to bloom in 2nd year! Plants reached 40; plus, invasive, irregular flowering; The yellow starlike flowers fall a bit in the cut stage.

Comments

Year 1

Similar to Lysimachia clethtroides; Clethroides much preferred by our customers. Looks better, ships better, better vase life; I grew these in pots because the word ‘vulgaris’ makes me nervous. I don’t need anything else in my garden that is weedy. I got no flowers; These plants were planted in an area which is normally damp (perfect for lysimachia), but did not receive water for almost 3 months. Fifty percent is only guess of how many plants are alive. I’ll know better next year; Easy once established, live and replant every 3 years; All Lysimachia have been difficult here. Don’t seem to like our mild, Mediterranean winters or our neutral soil pH. Should be planted here for moderate first year crop and replanted. Divided after 2nd or 3rd year; All survived, just didn’t flower.

Year 2

Because of previous year drought, plants barely were alive in spring - no flowers; Nice flower, when it blooms!
