Trial: Perennial

Years Trialed: 1999, 2000

Good Qualities

Year 1

Easy grower. Solid green leaves not as desirable as variegated; Plants grew well and I know will produce next year; Plants are filling area in at 1′ × 1′ spacing; size is nice, most grasses are too large for home use.

Year 2

Easy, really nice plant, I used foliage as well as flowers, nice size grass; I love it but my customers don’t; they will buy Johnson grass before this; next year I’ll try just the foliage, not the heads and see if that works; Can cut whole plant off to harvest and will regrow; Arching slender foliage, interesting flower stalk.

Problems

Year 1

Leaf blades are sharp/painful to cut (2); Too short; Neither the flower heads nor leaves appear saleable. Maybe next year; Has short harvest window for fresh.

Year 2

Too ‘grassy’ – too much like wild grasses

Comments

Year 1

Miscanthus sinsensis ‘Variegata’ has a longer stem showing; I am not sure what I was supposed to cut on this grass. I used the blades a couple of times in bouquets but it never did flower. Maybe next year?; Still in 4 ½; pots. I’ll plant soon but not optimistic. Leaves are not bold enough; Nothing special; First seed heads showed week of August 8.

Year 2

Similar to Miscanthus sinsensis ‘Varigatus’; Other cultivars have more interesting foliage.
