Phlox Paniculata 'Icecap'

Trial: Perennial

Years Trialed: 1998, 1999

Good Qualities

Year 1

Nice flower form. Good size head. Good disease resistance; Beautiful pure white color; Tall white, great for wedding work; Good sturdy plant; Fragrant, long lasting.

Year 2

High wedding demand for this flower in August, September. As mildew resistant as ‘David’ but more vigorous. Much better prices than pink, red, or other colors; Very sturdy; Different flower form than ‘David’ and ‘Mt. Fuji’. Also later; Excellent color.

Problems

Year 1

Did not tolerate heat well (Zone 6).

Year 2

Too short (2); The flower heads were so large I could only use any side shoots I could cut; Need to stagger blooms to have on market an extended time.

Comments

Year 1

Hope they will be taller next year; We had extremely hot and dry summer. It should overwinter no problem. I await; Florist enjoyed all of the phlox varieties; No flowers as of September 30. This variety looks promising. We have another white variety that has not bloomed in 2 years (Watsonville, CA). This one looks better. Plants in California did not flower in the first year.

Year 2

Excellent vase life, 7-10 days. Ships well if cut with one bloom open; “A keeper” good white; Very unusual to lose phlox over winter.
