Phlox Paniculata 'Purple Haze'

Trial: Perennial

Years Trialed: 2000, 2001

Good Qualities

Year 1

No powdery mildew! (2); Light purple color, popular in weddings work, very mildew resistant, ships well, has 7-10 day vase life with Rogard RS; Color.

Year 2

Large head size and nice flower form; vigorous; Very popular color, good productivity, ships well when picked tight.

Problems

Year 1

Weak lavender color (2); Rather weak plants, foliage suffered from some kind of black spot, not all plants flowered; Did not establish well; I liked the color but people kept asking whether it was white, purple or pink; Needs 2nd season to reach economic production; Too short.

Year 2

I thought that the flower color was muddy and therefore unattractive; It looked washed out rather than hazy; Some florists prefer darker violet; Did not seem to be as hardy as the other cultivars/varieties we grow - surprised by this.

Comments

Year 1

Similar to Phlox paniculata 'Miss Violet'; They were not happy campers this summer; Maybe next season will be better; Two weeks earlier than 'Miss Violet', very popular color.

Year 2

Similar to garden phlox; Very good vase life.
