Trial: Perennial

Years Trialed: 1999, 2000

Good Qualities

Year 1

Dark stem and big head are nice; New dark red color. Large interesting leaf. Good red colored flower; The color was great; Well established (slow start). Forming nice flower buds, stocky and full; Huge heads, good color, good stems.

Year 2

Color (2); Huge heads, tall, easy, what a plant; These were huge – almost too big, but very nice.

Problems

Year 1

Short stem length (3); Shows more first year vigor than Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’, so I expect it to reach 18; to 24; when 2 or 3 year; Flowers at same time as Autumn Joy which is in over supply (frequently). Varieties with earlier or later flowering would be more desirable; Short but I think will be taller next year; Deer like this one. Short harvest window for fresh market.

Year 2

Heads are so big they scare people, deer candy; Seems to be slow to spread where I have it located, I may move it to higher ground this spring and see if that helps; Too hot when flowered and passed their peak too fast; Slow to establish, plants will produce best if not lifted, production continues to increase for up to 10+ years.

Comments

Year 1

Similar to Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ (3); More attractive foliage than Autumn Joy but shorter and less productive . Light pink color; Mine are still in 4 ½; pots but these are good looking plants. We’ll see more next year; Excellent new plant to expand sedum for cut flowers from only ‘Spectablis’ and ‘Autumn Joy’; Should be fall planted here. Hope for better results in 2nd year. Could be a good landscape plant. Certainly needs a second or third year to evaluate true potential. Autumn Joy is the standard in trade. Needs to be better than Autumn Joy to find a market; I really liked this sedum and think it will be a nice one.

Year 2

Same species as ‘Autumn Joy’, but very different flower and stem color; Very popular, in demand.
